A Quick Intro on Using the Common Backlinks Tool
The Common Backlinks Tool (CBLT) helps you find link prospects by looking at where your competitors get their common links from.
By using the common backlink link building strategy, you can significantly improve your organic search ranking. CBLT helps you understand what your competitors have in common.
Looking at this highly simplified diagram, we can see that A through H are link sources and 1, 2, and 3 are three competitors:
In the diagram, both A and F have links to all three competitors, the other link sources do not. This means that A and F are the common backlinks for these three competitors.
Those common backlinks could help your rankings a lot if you acquire a link there as well.
Quickly find and analyze the link profile of your competitors
You can quickly find your competitors by using the "Find Competitor Pages" feature and searching for your chosen keyword. You can then choose the language, the country of the search engine and decide whether you want to search pages or domains. You can enter up to 50 URLs, and of course you can also do it manually, either one by one or by pasting them from a list.
Get a quick overview of common backlink metrics
The histogram shows your competitors' common backlinks and groups them based on similarity strength and chosen metrics. This makes it easier to decide how to prioritize further analysis. In the example above, you may decide to start looking for common links that have a Power*Trust = 8-12.
Quickly spot common ground with the results matrix
Common links can be seen as a number in the Co# column and are also represented by the dots in the matrix. Clicking on the dots in the matrix will launch a QBL, displaying backlinks to the entered domain. You should try to get backlinks similar to these.
If you want to see more metrics for detailed competitor backlink analysis, you can run the CBLT in Detail mode and select which metrics are important to you.

The ultimate toolbox
For years I, as well as the staff, have been using LinkResearchTools and see it as the ultimate toolbox when it comes to backlinks. From backlink profiling or competitor analysis, and negative link evaluation, LRTs are unbeatable.
I finally got to see those spammy links!
Well, we made the decision to upgrade our account and see ALL the toxic spam links pointing to our website; links that Google penalized us for in the past, and we're still trying to get away from them. Anyway, we found the list of toxic links, created a disavow file, and sent it to Google. Although Penguin is live, disavowing links is still crucial. We can already see the impact!
